The Devil
My backyard is screaming with all the kids from our street. Its amazing how being able to play outside changes everything. During the cold months we sit and play inside without a knock at the door for months. When the temperature reaches 40 my door bell is ringing off the hook! Charlie and Abbey have quite the mix of friends, they definately are a group to behold. Right now Ariyanna, the cute girl Charlie has a crush on, is telling the other kids in an earth shattering conversation that "the devil lives underground everywhere." Charlie, the earth knowledge base he is, asks "with all the magma?" Then all the kids ask whats magma and Charlie tells them its lava under the earth. Two things come to mind, man my kid is awesome and boy we need to go to church! I'm not to sure Charlie knew what she meant when she was talking about the devil. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? We talk about God all the time; he thinks that God lives in the clouds. But when do you introduce the devil? I think CCD covered that for me when I was a kid. But it really makes me think I need to get back into Church to help cover all questions we would have.

Wow my grandson is smart! I had forgotten about magma! He knowes much more then I ever thought of knowing at that age. And yes, I believe Charlie would give a CCD teacher a run for their money!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that is priceless!!! I've also wrestled with the religion thing since we have Ava Jane now. I've not just fallen away from the church, I've questioned the premise of religion all together. I still have some figuring out to do, but luckily I have a little time before she starts realizing what's going on.
ReplyDeleteI think I just became lazy with not going to church. I worked retail for so long that making to church was nearly impossible.
ReplyDeleteBut organized religion is confussing to me now that I'm an adult. My husband was a Philosophy major which creates some interesting conversations when it comes to religion. I on the other hand do believe in God. This creates a grey area alot, but Brian thinks that the teachings of religion are important to teaching the kids how to be good people. The whole ten commmandment thing and all. I'd like to get back into the church. It was always such a big part of my family growing up. And thinking about it all I don't want the kids to miss any sacrements if they want to follow the church later in life. There is a huge Catholic school here and I have to admit its crossed my mind a few times to check it out. But here I write this on Ash Wednesday from my couch with no ashes on my forehead.
I know you didn't ask for my two sense on this but here it is anyway.....you don't need a church to teach your kid about religion - really you just need religious text and the patience and willingness to go through it with your child...I mean can you imagine explaining to Charlie how a giant fish swallowed a man and then spit him back out three days later? (story of Jonah in the bible) It's like telling a kid that the scene where Gepetto is swallowed by the whale in Pinocchio is real. Or how about Daniel in the Lions den or the three guys who walk through fire and live. Charlie will have fun with those so you just need some patience. Also realize there are many religious text that can teach your kids how to be good people besides just the Christian ones and studying more than one might also help them to be tolerant of other peoples beliefs. I would say that for me personally, having grown up in the church and having gone to secular and religious schools that more than anything what taught me to be a good person was the example set by the adults around me and peer/sibling pressure. (For example - your siblings and other kids don't want to play with you when you lie all the time, but when you watch an adult lie you learn that sometimes people do lie.) Anyway those are just my unasked for comments and I don't even have kids which I'm sure changes your perspective so feel free to ignore me. I think you and Brian are really good parents and are already doing a great job of teaching your kids to be good people. :)
ReplyDeleteWell thanks Rachel! Your imput is definately welcomed and missed! But as I'm reading your post it brings attention to me that I really don't know much about the bible. I think thats another reason why I want to get back into church, to try to learn more. Charlie has a children's bible that he got from his preschool that we've read a few times. It has all kinds of crazy stories I didn't remember or know about. The first few are pretty funny though, the whole Adam and Eve story turned into kid friendly apple eating. Anyway, I thankyou for your insight.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see Harold and Charlie have a conversation- or better yet Harold and Brian!
ReplyDeleteOne time I read part of a bible that had been translated into Ebonics...it was interesting to say the least. :)
